Before you start

A cancer diagnosis changes the shape of a life in an afternoon. There are appointments to keep and decisions to make, and underneath all of it a flood of feelings that don’t arrive in any sensible order. The National Cancer Institute lists shock, fear, anger, guilt, loneliness and hope among the common ones, often all in the same week.

A journal won’t change a scan result. What it can do is give those feelings somewhere to go, so they take up a little less room in your head. Research on expressive writing with cancer patients suggests that putting the experience into words can reduce distress and, for some people, fewer unplanned medical visits in the months that follow.

This guide follows the path many people describe: the weeks after a diagnosis, the long stretch of treatment, and the people walking alongside. For each, it introduces the Writeway journals chosen for the Facing Cancer collection, so you can start with the one that fits where you are today.

When Writing Isn’t Enough

Journaling is a support, not a treatment, and it is not a substitute for talking to your care team about how you are coping. Most cancer centres have counsellors, social workers or psycho-oncology services, and asking for them is a normal part of care. Macmillan Cancer Support has a clear overview of where to find emotional help, and the National Cancer Institute describes when feelings have become something to get help with.

Your journal can come with you to those conversations. The things you wrote on the hard nights are often exactly what a counsellor needs to hear, and exactly what is hardest to say out loud.

All of these journals are in the Writeway store, and the features page shows how they work. If you’re new to the app, downloading it gets you a first journal free.
