Hotels, shelters and relatives’ spare rooms are rarely restful. The bed is wrong, the sounds are unfamiliar, and the quiet at night leaves room for everything you managed not to think about during the day. Poor sleep then makes the next day harder, which makes the next night worse.

A short bedtime ritual can interrupt that cycle. Writing down the three things that have to happen tomorrow, and then closing the journal, tells your mind the list is kept somewhere safe. A calming visualisation or a story read slowly can do the rest.
