Before you start

A house fire takes more than a building. It takes the routines that held a day together, the place you went to feel safe and, often, the objects that carried your memories. In the weeks that follow there is a great deal to do and very little room to feel any of it.

A journal can be one of the few things in that time that asks nothing of you. It doesn’t need an insurance claim number. It doesn’t need you to be coping well. It is simply a place to put down what is happening, in whatever order it comes.

This guide walks through the stages people describe after a fire, from the first days of shock to the slow work of starting again, with ideas for writing through each of them. It also introduces the Writeway journals that were chosen for this collection, so you can pick up the one that fits the week you’re in.

When Writing Isn’t Enough

Journaling is a support, not a treatment. If you find that weeks have passed and the fog hasn’t lifted, that you can’t sleep most nights, or that you’re avoiding anything connected to the fire, it is worth talking to someone. The Red Cross offers guidance on recovering emotionally after a disaster, and in the United States the Disaster Distress Helpline is free, confidential and open around the clock.

Your journal can come with you to those conversations. The things you wrote on the hard nights are often exactly what a counsellor needs to hear, and exactly what is hardest to say out loud.
